Infertility Q & A

What is infertility?

Infertility is the inability to become pregnant. Your doctor diagnoses you with infertility if you’re under 35 and you’ve been trying to conceive for at least a year, or if you’re over 35 and have been trying for at least six months.

If you've tried to conceive for a full year but haven't gotten pregnant, your OB/GYN diagnoses infertility. If you're 35 or older, it's six months instead of a year.

About 12% of American women trying to conceive are affected by this condition every year. About 35% of men trying to conceive with their partner suffer from infertility every year.

Just because you’ve been labeled as infertile does not mean that you can never conceive. Instead, it’s a challenge that your team at Alliance OB/GYN helps you overcome with the aid of testing and treatment plans.

What causes infertility?

A variety of different things can cause infertility in a man or woman.

When a woman suffers from fertility struggles, they’re often linked to problems like:

  • Ovulation problems and subsequent hormone imbalances
  • Fallopian tube blockage
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine abnormalities

Infertility in men is most often caused by:

  • Hormonal disorders
  • Genetic disorders that cause low sperm count
  • Disruptions to ejaculatory and/or testicular function

Issues like these cause changes to sperm count, sperm mobility, and sperm shape, which can all impact male fertility.

If you’re female, to test you your fertility, your Alliance OB/GYN caregiver performs tests, like pelvic and abdominal ultrasounds or bloodwork. If you’re male, they test your fertility by getting a sample of your semen and performing a semen analysis.

What is the treatment for infertility?

How your Alliance OB/GYN physician treats your infertility is based on your individual case. They choose what they believe is best for you and begin with simple changes, like suggesting you use an ovulation tracker or alter your lifestyle to help alleviate underlying problems.

Common treatments for infertility include:

  • Hormone therapy
  • Medication to stimulate ovulation
  • In vitro fertilization
  • Intrauterine insemination

If you have a blockage, like a uterine fibroid, that’s keeping you from conceiving, your Alliance OB/GYN specialist can perform minimally invasive surgery to remove it.
