OSTEOPOROSIS

At first blush, it may seem strange to visit your gynecologist to treat osteoporosis, but at Alliance OBGYN Associates, we have extensive experience treating and preventing this common disease.

Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease, and is especially common in women. It’s estimated that about 1 out of 5 American women over the age of 50 have it. Osteoporosis weakens bones and results in bone fractures. About half of all women over the age of 50 will have a fracture of the hip, wrist, or spine at some point in their lives. Progressive osteoporosis can lead to serious life-threatening bone fractures later in life.

It’s important that women be proactive about osteoporosis and treatment. Osteoporosis is often caused by or exacerbated by menopause, related to the drop in estrogen that occurs in a woman during this change of life. Your Alliance physician is highly experienced at treating and preventing osteoporosis, both before and after menopause.

Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is both preventable and treatable for women, and the physicians at Alliance OBGYN Associates are skilled in the identification and treatment of the disease. Our goal is to work with you to prevent bone loss through osteoporosis, and to reverse bone loss that has occurred. Strengthening your bones will help prevent dangerous bone fractures.

At Alliance OBGYN, your physician will recommend simple lifestyle changes that can reduce your risk of osteoporosis. He or she may recommend a calcium and vitamin D supplement, certain weight-bearing exercises, or diet changes. If these simple lifestyle changes are not enough to mitigate your risk of osteoporosis, your Alliance OBGYN physician may also prescribe a medication that will help prevent bone loss and even reverse osteoporosis.
