Hysterectomy Q & A

What’s a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is an operation during which Dr. Obianwu at Alliance OB/GYN fully or partially removes the uterus. Hysterectomies treat diseases and conditions of the uterus, or conditions aggravated by the uterus, like:

  • Uterine cancer
  • Cervix cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Problematic uterine fibroids
  • Uterine prolapse
  • The thickening of the uterus (adenomyosis)
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Endometriosis
  • Chronic pelvic pain

How do doctors perform hysterectomies?

Dr. Obianwu performs hysterectomies using the robotic assistance of da Vinci® surgical technology. This technology gives him:

  • 3D HD visual access inside the body
  • Enhanced control and precision
  • Wristed instruments with a much greater range of rotation than human arms.

Hysterectomies performed with da Vinci robotic technology are safer and more successful than traditional hysterectomies. They also produce less blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times.

What are the different types of hysterectomies?

There are a few different types of hysterectomies. These include:

Subtotal hysterectomy

Subtotal hysterectomies, also known as supracervical hysterectomies, are hysterectomies during which the doctor only removes the upper part of the uterus. In this scenario, they leave the cervix intact.

Radical hysterectomy

During a radical hysterectomy, the doctor removes the entire uterus. This includes the cervix, top of the vagina, and the tissue present on the side of the uterus. Usually, they only perform this type of surgery when they’re removing cancer.

Total hysterectomy

During a total hysterectomy, the doctor removes the cervix and the entire uterus.

Oophorectomy

During an oophorectomy, doctors also remove the ovaries.

Salpingectomy

During a salpingectomy, doctors also remove the fallopian tubes.

Do I need a hysterectomy?

The choice of whether or not to have a hysterectomy is a weighty one that you can only decide with the help of your doctor. However, you may be a good candidate for a hysterectomy if:

  • You have a uterine condition that’s causing you pain or complications
  • You have cancer in the area
  • You don’t want to have any or any more children
  • You’re OK with entering menopause early
